Roadside Memorials are seen throughout Clay County’s byways and highways.

The Indiana Department of Transportation does not “officially” have a Roadside Memorial sign marker tribute program.

When asked, officials say they are not allowed in Indiana.

However, they don’t look for them or take them down as part of the INDOT daily agenda.

If there is a legitimate concern about a roadside memorial causing a safety issue, INDOT will attempt to contact the family to address or remove the problem.

MEMORIAL REGISTRY

The State of Indiana not only acknowledges but also supports the practice of Roadside Memorials to honor loved ones who have lost their lives in roadside accidents. In line with this, the state provides a registry - https://roadsidetribute.com/indiana - where you can mark, locate, and pay tribute to your loved one(s) through a Roadside Memorial.

The service is currently free to register. A picture of the site can be uploaded to create a virtual tribute, which allows the site to share the story of the loved one killed.

The virtual tribute provides a way to share the roadside memorial with others electronically and through various social networks.
