American Legion hosting fundraiser

Sunday, April 24, 2011

To the Editor:

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, wartime veteran's organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.

It is a not-for-profit community service organization, which now numbers nearly three million members.

The Brazil Post No. 2 is the oldest post in the state of Indiana and has for many years maintained a commitment to helping people in our county.

Members donate countless hours to our community. We have sponsored many events, including the community Easter Egg Hunt, Adopt-A-Family at Christmas, serving as a facilitator for Hoosier Boys' and Girls' state, and preparing care packages for our men and women serving overseas.

As you probably are already aware, the post was forced to close Dec. 22, 2010, due to financial difficulties. Members are working to implement fundraisers, etc., to reopen our post.

A benefit for Post 2 will take place May 14, 2011, at the V.F.W. Post, located at 303 S. Depot St., Brazil. The benefit hours are noon until midnight. Legion members have many events scheduled, including:

* Hog Roast, including baked beans and slaw. Price for food is $7,

* Bake Sale,

* Timberman Auction will be calling an auction for us, beginning at noon until all items are gone, and

* Many local bands are scheduled to perform.

The post needs your help! We are asking for items to auction and any monetary donations. All sponsors will be recognized through radio and television advertising. Your business will also be listed on a banner. This banner will be displayed the day of the event and will be carried in the Loyalty Day Parade.

For more information, please contact Selma Paver at 812-239-4153 or Roz Crowell at 812-239-9289.

Pease help the "Oldest Post in Indiana."

Thank you,

American Legion Family
