A recent traffic stop leads to a short pursuit and crash, sending a local man to the hospital.

On Tuesday, the Clay City Police Department confirmed a Spencer man was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital to treat injuries sustained in a motorcycle car accident near the intersection of 8th and Nye streets in Clay City shortly after 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to the preliminary reports, while on patrol in the area of County Road 500 South and State Road 59, CCPD Sgt. Tyler Silvers initiated the traffic stop after his patrol car's radar system clocked a motorcycle twice for exceeding the posted speed limit of 55 mph, with a reading of 85 mph.

During the stop, the officer asked if the driver had been drinking. Initially, the driver said no, but later agreed to a breathalyzer test. As the officer retrieved a portable breathalyzer from the patrol car, the man started the motorcycle and left.

The driver allegedly failed to yield at least twice at intersections before striking the bumper of a car trying to turn at 8th and Nye. Officials confirm no one in the vehicle reported any injuries during the incident.

However, the motorcycle driver lost control of the bike that went into a spin before tossing him off as it hit the ground.

Further details regarding the driver's condition are unavailable due to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Further accident details are not available, but The Brazil Times will update this story if any new information is available.

NOTE - The date in the initial was incorrectly stated, and was corrected by the Clay City Police Department.
