Traffic stop brings biggest recent meth amount
Brazil Police Department confirms a recent traffic stop led to two people’s arrests and the largest amount of methamphetamine — almost a half-pound — seized during an arrest in the city in recent years.
The Clay County Prosecutor’s Office filed probable cause affidavits and formal charges during initial hearings Tuesday against:
Clay Circuit Court: Lacey N. Davis, 31, Terre Haute - Dealing in methamphetamine(F2), Possession of methamphetamine(F6), and Driving while suspended(MA).
Clay Superior Court: Donald Charles Cheney II, 37, Greencastle - Possession of methamphetamine between 10-28 grams(F4), Unlawful possession of syringe(F6).
They remain incarcerated at the Clay County Justice Center on cash bonds of $50,000 each while awaiting formal court proceedings.
Although details are limited due to the ongoing investigation, BPD Criminal Investigative Division (CID) Det. Ryan Cannon said a traffic stop Saturday in the 800 block of North Walnut Street led to the arrests and discovery of approximately 212 grams of methamphetamine, almost a half-pound of the drug.
A Clay County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit did a routine walk around and exterior “free air sniff of the vehicle,” alerting to the presence of a controlled substance. In a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers found the methamphetamine, numerous small plastic baggies, and an undisclosed large amount of cash.
The vehicle was impounded, and Davis and Cheney were taken into custody and transported to the CCJC for booking without incident.
Further details are not available, but The Times will update this story when and if new information is available.
Officials confirm that drug cases are always a concern. Still, recent reports from residents about finding discarded syringes and “meth pipes” in their yards are very unsettling, especially with summer on the way and children going outside to play.
“If people find something like that, they need not touch it, or at least wear gloves to get it out of harm’s way of others,” Cannon said, urging people not to get any of the potential substance on their skin. “They need to call us, and we will come out and make sure it is properly destroyed.”
