UPDATE - Fatal accident closes SR 59
Two vehicles were involved in an accident that shut down State Road 59 for several hours Monday. Officials confirm one fatality.
Officials had not released many details as of Monday evening due to the active investigation and accident reconstruction performed by Indiana State Police.
They were able to report two vehicles were involved. The identities of the people involved were not released.
Shortly after 3 p.m., officials believe a passenger car was attempting to cross State Road 59 from West Craig Avenue to White Rock Road when it was broadsided by a pickup truck. Both vehicles ended up on the southwest side of SR 59.
Due to the severity of the crash, traffic was rerouted by volunteer firefighters from the area while law enforcement and first responders worked the accident scene.
No injuries were reported for the driver of the pickup truck, but the driver of the passenger car has been airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital.
A fatality was confirmed at the scene, but the name and further details will not be released until family members have been contacted.
The responding agencies included the Clay County Sheriff and Brazil Police departments, Brazil Fire Department, various local fire departments, and STAR Ambulance. Support from other agencies was also on the scene but has not been identified at this time.
