BREAKING UPDATE: Deputy Brison Swearingen shot during warrant service, one in custody

Shortly after 10 a.m. Friday, shots were fired upon Clay County Sheriff's Deputies trying to serve a warrant in southern Clay County.

According to Indiana State Police Putnamville Public Information Officer Sgt. Matt Ames confirmed one deputy was shot by an unidentified suspect armed with a rifle. The incident occurred near the New Brunswick Bridge on State Road 59, approximately six miles south of Clay City.

Deputy Brison Swearingen sustained non-life-threatening injuries. STAR Ambulance personnel treated Swearingen at the scene before being taken to an Indianapolis hospital by AirEvac. The deputy's family was notified and went to the hospital.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the incident, including helicopters, drone units, K-9 units, SWAT tactical units, and officers from Brazil Police Department, Clay City Police Department, Clay County Emergency Management, Terre Haute Police Department, Indiana State Police, and several other agencies.

Center Point Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department maintained traffic control on SR 59.

According to Clay Community School Corporation, Clay City Junior-Senior High School and the Elementary School were placed on lockdown for security purposes.

Law enforcement had the suspect surrounded in the woods just north of the New Brunswick Bridge and used flash-bang devices (also known as stun grenades), which are used to disorient a suspect's senses temporarily.

Around 2:32 p.m., the suspect was taken into custody, and various agencies were being released from the scene.

Clay County Justice Center - JAIL - Hofmann

Joe L. Hofmann, 42, Jasonville, is wanted out of Vigo County on warrants for escape, resisting law enforcement, theft (6 counts), possession of a syringe, and auto theft.

The Clay County Jail has confirmed Hofmann is booked into the local facility. Hofmann was taken to a local hospital to be medically cleared.

Indiana State Police will continue investigating the scene at SR59 over the next few hours.

Ames said during an earlier press conference at the scene:

"We're here, definitely as a brotherhood, to take care of each other," Ames said about the heartwrenching situation. "We're here to serve the public. That's what our priority is, to make it safe for everyone."

The Clay Sheriff's Department wishes to thank everyone who helped during the department's time of need Friday.
