Parents of some students at Clay Community Schools received alerts Friday morning about two incidents of concern on Thursday, January 13.

Northview High School parents received the following alert:

“Late yesterday afternoon, we received a report that a student may have a weapon in his vehicle on the Northview High School Campus. Northview Administration, along with our School Resource officer from the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, immediately followed our safety protocols and were able to secure the student and the weapon from the vehicle, without incident.

There was, at no time, a threat to use the weapon.

I want to commend and thank the students and staff who immediately reported the issue to Administrative staff. I would also like to thank our School Resource Officer for his assistance in this matter. Law enforcement and school officials are continuing their investigation.”

East Side Elementry parents received the following alert:

“A report was made to local law enforcement late last night that an East Side Elementary student sent a threatening message to another student.

Law enforcement apprehended the student and informed school officials that a verbal threat was made that involved a toy gun.

Law enforcement and school officials are continuing their investigation.”

Superintendent Jeff Fritz told The Brazil Times Friday that all safety protocols and procedures were followed during both incidents to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

“Our administrations and staff members worked hand in hand with local law enforcement during these incidents,” said Fritz, who said the incidents are still being investigated. “This involves protected student information, which would not be released to the public.”
