Severe weather outbreak threatens West Central Indiana; Tornado Watch still in effect for Clay County

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a slew of watches and warnings today, Monday, Feb. 27, in response to severe weather.

As of 1 p.m., a Tornado Warning issued for nearby Putnam County officially expired. However, “radar-indicated rotation” was reported as early as 12:13 p.m. in eastern Clay and western Putnam counties. The alleged tornado was detected 7 miles east of Brazil, or 22 miles east of Terre Haute, and was moving northeast at 50mph.

As of 1:43 p.m., Clay County was still under a Tornado Watch advisory from the NWS, as well as a Wind Advisory, expected to expire around 7 p.m. this evening.

According to NWS, southwest winds ranging from 20-30mph with gusts up to 50mph are anticipated. The advisory affects portions of central, east central, north central, south central, southeast, southwest and west central Indiana.

Possible impacts include debris, including unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and power outages may be experienced.

Precautionary and preparedness actions recommended by the NWS include: Taking cover; move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building; avoid windows; if outdoors, in a mobile home or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.
