Initially, a vision for free transport for America’s Veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to honor their sacrifices; the non-profit Indy Honor Flight was created in May 2005.

Experiencing an Honor Flight is a one-day “trip of a lifetime” to visit the memorials built in the Veteran’s honor, said Leesa Ann Nesty at the Clay County Historical Society meeting in May, “I encourage you to volunteer. It is so rewarding.”

Nesty recently returned home as an escort for local Veteran Joe Holechko’s trip to Washington, DC.

Nesty explained that most senior veterans go first on the waiting list, but it changes as other veterans apply. She said the non-profit program is volunteer-based and provides the following:

•All food and drink.

• A special commemorative polo shirt.

• A hat indicating the Veteran’s service era and

• A day they will never forget.

“There is a special job for everyone who volunteers,” said Nesty, which includes sorting and delivering special cards for the Veteran’s roll call.

Apparently, the program has several hundred volunteers on a waiting list willing to travel with our heroes, but they are always looking for more to make each Honor Flight special.
