On Sunday, June 4th, The annual Calcutta Cemetery Memorial was held to remember those who have passed from June 1st, 2022, through May 31st, 2023. The gathering also served as an annual meeting for the Board of Directors.

The memorial began with a rendition of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and a pledge to our flag conducted by Jake Bennett. Mark Mullinix, of Harmony Mckinley Hill Church of Christ, delivered the invocation and benediction. The Brazil American Legion and VFW Color Guard & Honor Guard Squad also attended to salute our veterans.

Secretary John D. Mace explained the importance of honoring those who have passed and keeping their memories alive. He described how Chris Morris, owner of 1st Choice Lawn Care, comes to mow the cemetery twice each week, and there are always at least one or two people visiting the grave of a loved one. Thirty-four names of those who passed in the last year were read at the Memorial Service, four of which were veterans. Subsequently, Leesa Nesty explained that at least eighty veterans still do not have a military marker, “It is vitally important every veteran gets a flag,” she explained. She also stressed the significance of women veterans, explaining they “Don’t want to leave the women out.”

A local chapter of DAR has recently begun the No Veteran without a Flag project, a vital and beloved movement created by the Eliza Rizley Stacey chapter.

This lengthy endeavor aims to recognize every veteran in Clay County and honor their service. Since the start of this project, approximately 500 veterans have been named and identified in Calcutta Cemetery. Of the 500 veterans, 29 served during the Civil War, one served during the Spanish-American War, one served during the Mexican War, and two served in the Women’s Army Corp.
