The 13th annual Pierson DeHart Memorial Golf Tournament is set for Saturday at Forest Park Golf Course in Brazil to raise money for children with medical problems.

The golf outing is named for Pierson DeHart, the son of Melissa and Chris DeHart.

Pierson was born into the DeHart family nearly 16 years ago with multiple medical problems and passed away on May 7, 2009.

As a result of his condition, the community reached out and gave so much support. In turn, the DeHart family wants to extend that same support to another family in the community facing a similar situation of raising a child with special needs.

This year all money raised goes to Cru Romas, a soon-to-be 5-year-old of parents Brandon and Alicia Romas.

Said Alicia Romas of her son: “Cru was born with a rare genetic condition called IMAGe syndrome. It’s so rare, doctors and specialists are still learning more information about it every day. We do know it will affect his growth and development ability. Cru is a little guy but full of personality. He is a loving, happy, energetic little boy. Cru is currently taking growth hormone therapy to hopefully increase his overall adult height.

“When Cru was 3 years old, he was also diagnosed with autism and Global Development Delay. Cru is receiving speech therapy and ABA therapy. With all that, we feel Cru has made leaps and bounds and amazes us every day, but with every autistic child, we don’t really know what their lives will look like in the future as they are so beautifully different. We are optimistic and hopeful Cru continues to start verbally communicating and continues to progress. We feel blessed to be his parents and will continue to advocate and give Cru everything he needs to succeed to the best of his ability. We are so honored and blessed to be the recipients of this year’s Pierson DeHart Memorial Golf Scramble.”

The tournament kicks off with lunch at noon and a shotgun tee-off at 1 p.m.
