CORRECTED: Car hauler fire on interstate causes traffic problems in Clay County

Submitted by someone online of the fire before emergency services showed up. The semi fire on I-70 westbound near the 32-mile marker had the interstate shut down while emergency crews work on extinguishing the fire.

A car hauler fire on Interstate 70 near the 32-mile marker caused Indiana State Police o shut the highway down around 7:18 a.m., causing traffic problems in Clay County.

Westbound traffic was diverted off the interstate at Cloverdale Exit 41, causing the traffic to pick either US 40 or 42. Both highways have routes to get back on I-70 in Clay County using State Road 59.

While both can become congested and hazardous, US 40 cuts through the center of Brazil before getting on SR59. Traffic was backed up for miles, with semis stopping at stop lights, causing extensive delays to traffic and congestion on other streets.

Cloverdale Township Fire Department request tankers and manpower from Jackson and Posey Township volunteer fire departments to help contain the blaze.

Meanwhile, a traffic accident was reported to 911 Dispatch near Great Dane on US40. Van Buren Fire Department and STAR Ambulance responded to the scene. No injuries were reported.

Around 8 a.m., ISP reported the left lane of I-70 was reopened, but motorists were urged to use caution as emergency crews continued to work the active scene.
