SENIOR SPOTLIGHT - CCHS ADY MCQUEEN

Friday, August 25, 2023

Unlike most Clay County seniors, Clay City student Ady McQueen has experienced attending both county high schools. Ady began at Northview but then transferred to Clay City to start her sophomore year.

“I moved down there because I thought that it might help me to learn more, like less kids, more one-on-one time, and I've got that. I've gotten a lot of one-on-one time [with the teachers].”

Ady is a part of the Clay City track team, running sprints such as the 100 and 200-meter dashes and the 4x100-meter relay. Ady was inspired to join the track team when she transferred to Clay City, wanting to get involved with her new school.

“I am glad I tried it because... I ended up being our top sprints for the past two years in a row.”

McQueen has gotten a sprints award plaque for the past two years, stating, “That's something I was kind of proud of because I was never a runner [before transferring to Clay City].”

When asked about her favorite part of running track, McQueen points to the people. Ady explains that track has allowed her to make “so many friends, and from other schools [as well].” She is also thankful for all her coaches and teammates, noting their kindness and how much they have helped her.

“I have had a really great learning experience... I've never really been into sports, and even being a senior I still have a lot to learn with running.”

Outside of school, Ady enjoys playing guitar and working at Tumble Express. She loves working with kids and explains that it is one of her favorite parts about her job.

“Being able to teach them and help them learn new skills, it makes you really happy... It makes me feel good about myself when I've helped someone accomplish something.”

Through her classes at Clay City, Ady has developed an interest in cooking. Last year, McQueen was part of the culinary arts program at Clay City High School, and she became very interested in developing her cooking skills.

“I was really interested in that, and it wasn't cause I was interested in it for a career, it was more that I wanted to better myself in cooking,” she explains.

Instead, Ady thinks she would like to pursue a career in the medical field. She is interested in becoming an X-ray technician and is considering participating in Ivy Tech's X-ray technician program.

Submitted - McQueen.

McQueen's interest in this field arose from her own experiences needing X-rays.

“Freshman year I fractured my ankle really bad... it was a really bad tumbling accident. I was in physical therapy, getting X-rays like once a week.”

Ady explains that she became interested when one technician showed her the X-ray equipment and how she used it. Ady also appreciates that there is variety in the job.

“I like that about it, that I can try different things.”

However, Ady is not fixed on becoming an X-ray technician, merely using it as a starting point to decide what career to pursue long-term.

“I want to try this and like different things to see what I'm interested in.”
