At a recent board meeting, the Carbon Town Board members selected a new Town Marshal.

SUBMITTED PHOTO - Rob Gambill was sworn in as the new Carbon Town Marshal by Attorney Eric Somheil at a recent town board meeting.

“We are happy to have him,” said Board President Mike Bemis. “Rob will be a perfect fit for a small town like Carbon.”

Rob Gambill has stayed busy after retiring from the Clay County Sheriff’s Department in 2019.

Gambill was appointed Staunton Town Marshal before retiring from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and accepting the Clay County Emergency Management Director job.

“I wanted to stay involved in law enforcement and remain certified by the state,” said Gambill, but earlier this year, he decided to run for a position on the Staunton Town Council. “I thought it would be improper to seek that position while serving as the town marshal, so I resigned in March.”

Gambill learned that Carbon was without a town marshal.

“It’s hard to step away from law enforcement totally- once it’s in your blood, it is hard to give up,” said Gambill, who was offered the job. “I set a goal as town marshal to help the community and avoid unnecessarily interfering with anyone’s life. I will primarily deal with quality-of-life issues for the town, enforce the town ordinances to help people become compliant rather than issue a citation that could result in a fine.”

Gambill plans on starting to patrol in Carbon this week and meet some of the residents.

Gambill urges residents with complaints regarding ordinance issues to call the non-emergency number at the sheriff’s office (812-446-2535 extension 5) and leave a message. Call 9-1-1 in case of an emergency or need to report a crime in progress.

“In the past, I’ve had people try to contact me via Facebook Messenger to report serious issues when they should call 911,” Gambill said. “I don’t closely monitor my social media accounts, and they are not a reliable way to contact me. I look forward to meeting all the residents and doing the best job possible for them.”
