SENIOR SPOTLIGHT - NHS ABBY KUMPF

Tuesday, November 28, 2023

Abby Kumpf is a senior at Northview High School. She is involved in Big Brother Big Sister, National Honors Society, and cross country. Outside of school, she likes to stay involved with her church, Union United.

Abby interns at Van Buren Elementary School and is a student-teacher for second grade.

“Teaching the kids [has] shown me how rewarding teaching truly is. You get to see it click in their minds when they finally understand the math problem you’ve been teaching them or when they finally remember their spelling words.”

As a student-teacher, Abby works with the students on learning vocabulary words and also leads a reading group.

“Teaching them has taught me that every kid deserves the chance to succeed, and I want to help give every kid that chance.”

In the future, Abby plans to attend Indiana State University to become an elementary special education teacher.

“I’ve been around kids almost my whole life, and I love helping people, so teaching is the perfect combination of those.”

Abby explains that she decided to become a special education teacher because she loves helping kids and those with special needs.

“I was around a few people that had special needs, and I realized that I had a special connection with them. I loved being around people with special needs, and I loved helping them.”

Kumpf states that one of her favorite memories from high school has been painting her senior parking spot with her mother.

Abby explains that her role model in her life has been her grandfather.

“He has shown me how to be a good friend to many, how to persevere through anything, and how to be a follower of Christ.”

At some point in her life, Abby would love to go to Hawaii and see Pearl Harbor.

“I have always learned about it in school... and I feel that it would be really interesting to see it in person.”
