Walter TerMeer

Walter TerMeer, 87, longtime resident of Brazil, Indiana, passed away on December 6, 2023, following a short illness.

Walt was born on August 6, 1934, in Iowa, the son of William and Maggie (DeVries) TerMeer. He graduated from Grand Rapids Central High School, in Grand Rapids, Iowa with the class of 1952. Walt joined the United States Marine Corps and served during the Korean War where he served as a tank crewman.

After his service to his country, Walt attended Brown Technical College, where he learned to work on radio stations. At the beginning of his career, Walt worked as a radio engineer. Walt concluded his career in radio as a General Manager.

Walt worked at Allison Transmission and retired after several years of service where he was a member of UAW Local 933.

Walt has been involved in many community organizations. More recently, he has been actively involved in the American Legion Post 2 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1127. Walt has served as chaplain for the American Legion for many years and is a past commander of the organization. He has also been a long-time member of Benwood Mt. Lebanon Church and a life member of the Marine Corps League.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents William and Maggie TerMeer and his siblings.

Walt is survived by his 3 sons: Mike TerMeer, Nathan TerMeer (Karen), and Joel TerMeer; grandchildren: Patricia, Micheal, James, Brittany, Sara, Megan, Joel Adam, and Mabry; great-grandchildren: Aislyn, Maximus, Anaris, Nathaniel, Colton, and Elijah, as well as several extended family members and friends.

Visitation will be at the Lawson – Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave. Brazil, Indiana 47834, on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Services with a military tribute will follow at 6:00 PM.
