1924-25 Brazil High School boys basketball team

The “Cave” at Mishawaka High School is the oldest active high school gym in Indiana. The first game played in The Cave was Mishawaka vs. Brazil High School on Saturday, December 27, 1924. Mishawaka lost the game 33-15.

Brazil High School later consolidated with two neighboring schools in 1984 to form Northview High School, which is located just west of Brazil.

With the 100th anniversary of this coming up, we reached out to Northview High School to see if they had any interest in playing. While they are already scheduled to be in a tournament December 26-29 in 2024, they were extremely excited and wanted to make this game happen. We have a signed contract to play against them on Saturday, January 4, 2025.

The vision of this game is to celebrate 100 years of basketball in The Cave, and make this an extremely unique and memorable day. In the coming months, details on uniforms, signage in the Cave, alumni participation, tickets, etc. will be worked through and we will continue to share information as we build up to the 100 Anniversary Game on January 4, 2025.

“There is nothing like Basketball in Indiana. We are honored to host what will be a great event next year and to honor the history of this great place…100 Years of Basketball in The Cave. We really appreciate Scott and his staff at Northview for making this happen!” - Mark Polsgrove, Athletic Director, Mishawaka High School

“As someone that gets to play all their home games in such a historic and unique place, it is special. Has the old time Indiana high school basketball feel when you walk into the place. We talk all the time about Hoosiers and having that type of feeling and it definitely has that feel. What a special place to play!” - Bodie Bender, Head Basketball Coach, Mishawaka High School

“We are very excited about this opportunity to play in “The Cave” that has hosted games for 100 years. I am amazed how far the team traveled to play a game in 1924. This experience will be something our current team will remember forever. I thank Athletic Director Mark Polsgrove and Mishawaka High School for the invitation to join them in this celebration of Indiana High School Basketball.” - Scott Buell, Athletic Director, Northview High School

“I am really excited to play a game against an opponent we do not usually see. Plus the opportunity to play in The Cave is something I think our kids will enjoy. This will be a very cool environment for our players, coaches, and fans." - Shawn Nevill, Head Basketball Coach, Northview High School
