Welcome to another edition of Middle School Minutes. Homecoming spirit and love are in the air at North Clay.

In correlation with Northview HIgh School’s Homecoming, North Clay created a week full of school spirit. Students and staff dressed up for themed days: Pajama, Students vs. Teachers, Beach, Adam Sandler, and Sports.

Lunchtime was filled with Cake Walks, games, and student dance competitions. The week concluded with a Pep Session. The band performed the school song. Also, the cheerleaders led the school in a chant. Students were encouraged to attend the Northview Boys’ basketball game Friday night.

Valentine’s Day is in the air at North Clay.

Mr. Rubin’s CTE class sold wooden hearts. He got the information from conversation hearts. They made over two hundred hearts in various colors and sayings.

“The kids really enjoyed the hands-on project. Many wanted to come down to work on them in Study Hall or free time. Proceeds from the project go back into the next holiday project and lab,” said Mr. Rubin.

Students also were able to purchase Crush(pop) cans for a dollar to be sent to other students or staff.

This fundraiser is sponsored by Mrs. Lovett’s Transition class.

“The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to purchase sensory items for my classroom as well as experiences in our community,” stated Mrs. Lovett.

The teacher focus this week is on Mr. Zach Keyes. He teaches Special Education. He currently is working with the 6th grade students. He is a local guy graduating from both Northview and Indiana State University. This is his sixth year at North Clay. People may see him along the sidelines of basketball games. He has been the Northview Lady Knights’ Basketball Coach for nine years.

“I got into teaching because I enjoy working with kids and it made coaching a lot easier! I love that my students create a different challenge for me every day,” stated Keyes.

He has the privilege of working with his wife, Mrs. Heather Keyes (Guidance Counselor), during his day at North Clay. When he is not at school, he enjoys working with younger basketball players and relaxing at home with his wife. Both North Clay and Northview are privileged to have Mr. Keyes!

When a student gets called to the back office, the first person they see is Mrs. Erica Boots. She is the Guidance and Discipline Secretary. She started working for Clay Community Schools in 2013 at East Side Elementary after being a stay-at-home mom. She has been at North Clay now for six years.

“I love working at North Clay because I enjoy seeing and interacting with all the kids. The best part is watching the kids grow, in so many ways, from 6th grade to 8th grade. I also have great coworkers,” said Mrs. Boots.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. They enjoy traveling, boating, and watching sports.
