The annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is on a single mission to feed the hungry in America and Clay County. The National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 670 event will occur on Saturday, May 11, the 32nd in its history.

Food Drive Coordinator Karen Stearley is looking for business sponsors for the event, especially covering the cost of the volunteer T-shirts.

“If you see a random person come up to your home and take your donation for the food drive, you might be worried,” said Stearley about the need for the shirts. “This way, you know it is a volunteer collecting for the drive.”

The national event is important for the local letter carriers as a way to give back to the community. However, the branch is small in numbers but mighty in the support of local volunteers.

“Our branch is very small,” said Stearley. “Sponsorship and volunteers help lighten the load on the letter carriers. Sponsorship donations enable us to purchase the t-shirts and provide a light lunch for our volunteers. It would be very difficult to do them on our own.”

Stearley said not one penny of the funds or the food items donated are kept.

“Everything is split between our local food pantries,” Stearley said.

Stearley will contact local businesses in person and by social media over the next few months about a $25 sponsorship.

Those interested in volunteering two hours the day of the event can call Stearley any time about details at 812-835-2161 through March.
