Eels to take on host WRV in sectional opener

Sunday, February 18, 2024

On Sunday evening, everyone involved with high school boys basketball turned their attention to the IHSAA sectional selection show as they waited to see the path they would have to take towards winning a championship.

Clay City was among those hundreds of teams.

The draw sets up a gauntlet of sorts for the Eels, who are the heavy favorites to win the Class A White River Valley Sectional title, to get through as Clay City will have to win three games, which includes the host Wolverines in the opening round with the likelihood of the two toughest teams – besides the Eels – to follow in Shakamak and Bloomfield, to claim their first championship since the 2014-15 season.

Clay City defeated White River Valley by a score of 67-45 on Jan. 27. That loss to the Eels started a string of losses for the Wolverines who have fallen in six of their last seven entering the final week of the regular season. Should the Eels get past the hosts in Tuesday’s opening round, they’ll take on Shakamak, a team they defeated by a score of 59-46 on Feb. 1, in the first of Friday’s semifinal games.
