SENIOR SPOTLIGHT - NHS ELISE SOMHEIL

Tuesday, March 19, 2024

Elise Somheil is a senior at Northview High School. Elise is involved in National Honors Society, Interact Club, and Excaliburs.

Outside of school, Somheil works at the Brazil YMCA. She explains that there can be challenges working there, but overall, she enjoys her job.

“It can be hard at times (people like to get snippy with me very quickly), but I've made many friends and the pros outweigh the cons.”

In the future, Elise plans to attend Indiana State University to pursue a degree in high school social studies education. After graduating with her bachelor's degree, she would like to get her master's degree and become a professor. Elise explains that one of her teachers inspired her to pursue this path.

“One of the main reasons I want to pursue a career in social studies education [is] Michelle Hunter, my world history and U.S. History teacher. She took something that I had an interest in and made it ten times better. She is so passionate about what she does, and it really inspired me.”

Someheil states that the friendships she has made in high school has made the past four years truly special.

“I think my favorite part of high school is my friends. It's been said a million times before, I know, but I feel like my friends are some of my biggest inspirations. I've never really had friends until eighth grade, and I've never taken it for granted since.”

Elise describes the special bond she has with one of her friends, Emily Rebelez-Arevalo.

“She is super funny, and I feel like we click perfectly when it comes to interests, hobbies, and humor. Not only that, but she has been there for me when I needed it most. I know she always has my back, and I always have hers.”

Unlike many traditional bucket lists, Somheil's has an item on it meant only to benefit people besides herself.

“I think the one thing in life I have to do before I die is get enough money to buy my parents a nice home in Florida. They've done so much for me and I appreciate them so much.”
