“It is fun, much better than sitting in a classroom,” said Porter, who admits the competition was more difficult this time. “One of the stations was more difficult than what I remember from last year.”

Porter is planning to attend Purdue University for Ag Engineering, explaining, “I am going to study off-road engineering, side by sides, tractors and stuff like that. Mechanical things have always interested me.”

Joy and Kirk Frederick are Porter’s parents.

More than 200 local high school students attended the annual automotive skills contest

“The automotive skills contest is a great opportunity for local high school students to interact with Ivy Tech instructors and local industry partners,” said Ivy Tech’s automotive program chair John Timberman. “It allows us to introduce them to what we offer here at Ivy Tech and the wide range of careers available in the automotive industry.”

2024 GOLDEN APPLE AWARD WINNER

For 27 years Automotive Teacher Tony Migliorini has guided students through life-skills and opportunities. He is humble about his personal success yet extremely proud of his students, following many as they build careers and lifetime achievements.

MIGLIORINI

Migliorini teaches professionalism, work ethic and leadership skills during the three-hour a day class that services and repairs upwards to more than 500 vehicles a year.

Migliorini’s students, past and present, are thankful to him as a teacher and proud for his being a guide into their becoming an adult, saying, “It doesn’t matter what the question is about cars, he always knows the answers. If you’re feeling down, he always listens.”

As stated before Migliorini is a humble man, who would prefer to talk about the program and his students much more than his own success.

“I am so proud of these guys. Both of these guys are class leaders and are willing to help anyone in the class,” said Migliorini about Merson and Frederick, and explained the class enjoyed the fun of doing news segments for the program. “Being chosen for a Golden Apple has been an amazing experience. It was great to get the program some exposure. I am thankful for everyone that reached out to say ‘congratulations’ in a text, call, or email. It is always nice to hear from friends, family, and former students.”
