DON HUGH HOWARD, CLAY COUNTY, IN

Wednesday, May 22, 2024

Don Hugh Howard passed away peacefully on May 21, 2024, at the age of 91 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Born on April 27, 1933, in Carbon, Indiana, to the late Norval and Ethel (Thomas) Howard, Don was a man whose life was marked by dedication, service, and the joy of simple pleasures. Don honorably served his country as an Army veteran before embarking on a career that showcased his strong work ethic and commitment to his community. He was a valued employee at B&G Distributing, Andrews Oil Company, and Shorty’s Gulf Gas Station, but he dedicated the majority of his professional life to the street department for the city of Brazil, Indiana. There, he worked tirelessly for over 20 years, ensuring the streets were safe and well-maintained until his well-deserved retirement. Outside of work, Don was a true family man, deeply devoted to his loved ones. On August 12, 1960, Don married the love of his life, Mary Lou Haynes. Together, they had one son, Chris. His home was his sanctuary, and he took great pride in keeping his lawn meticulously manicured. His passion for the outdoors was matched by his love for bowling, a sport he enjoyed both for the friendly competition and the camaraderie. Don was also an avid fan of the Dodgers, and he could often be found cheering on his favorite baseball team, a testament to his enduring loyalty and passion.

Don is preceded in death by his sister, Gloria “Dolly” Campbell (Emery), sister in laws, Leta Mace (John) and Margaret Foxx (Earl), and a cousin, Ruth Armstrong (Tom).

Don is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Mary Lou Howard, one son, Chris Howard, a brother, James Howard, two special nieces, Shari and Barbara, as well as many extended family members.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 28th at 11 A.M. at Calcutta Cemetery with Pastor Steve Blaydes officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clay Youth Football League 10350 North Meridian Street, Brazil, IN 47834.
