19 years removed from THE 9-11
Posted Thursday, September 10, 2020, at 6:54 PM19 years removed from The 9-11 We are now 19 years removed from Sept. 11, 2001, the day that is remembered as second only to Dec. 7, 1941, in the minds of many. A few things stand out in my mind as I sit in the editor’s chair at The Brazil Times today as I did then... -
Time for a road trip to Dana
Posted Thursday, September 3, 2020, at 11:19 AMReading the paper Friday, I was reminded of the great treat given to the staff of a newspaper where I worked several years ago. The publisher, Tim Timmons, took all of us to Dana, Indiana, to visit the Ernie Pyle Museum... -
Government that works
Posted Saturday, August 29, 2020, at 9:35 AMThe Brazil Board of Public Works and Safety put the finishing touches on one of the most needed and best government programs I’ve heard of in a long time. I’m talking about the four food distribution programs co-sponsored by the city of Brazil, the Senior Citizen Center and the Clay County emergency food pantry... -
School begins, time to crush on the new teacher
Posted Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at 10:50 AMHave you been reading “Baby Blues” on the comic page recently? About a week ago, the kids in the comic strip went back to school and the little mischief-maker boy, I think his name is Hammie, fell in love with his new teacher. Big hearts and all... -
Empathy is important
Posted Friday, July 24, 2020, at 1:24 PMIt’s amazing to me how many people share the same experiences. Get a new car? See how many people can tell you about their experience in car buying... -
Our kids were once kids
Posted Monday, June 22, 2020, at 11:30 AMOur kids were once kids I went to a graduation ceremony at Forest Park last night. The graduates wore homemade paper “mortarboard” hats and were just as cute as could be. The ceremony took place in the pavilion. As I sat there, taking pictures and watching the proceedings, I couldn’t help but think about those years when our kids were too young to go to kindergarten... -
What should Clay County be after COVID-19?
Posted Tuesday, May 5, 2020, at 10:38 AMThe State of Indiana is opening back up and we hope that will prove to be very positive with no spike in infection as a result. It’s been a difficult time for many people and I confess I have been thankful every morning I wake up that I have had a job to go to and have not been trapped in the house all day. ... -
Have a ... 'good day'
Posted Friday, April 17, 2020, at 10:32 AMPaul Harvey used to celebrate the resiliency and the ingenuity of Americans. It was only appropriate for his program, “Paul Harvey News and Comment” which was carried on the American Broadcasting Co. network, ABC. Many times during this COVID-19 monstrosity I have thought of Paul Harvey... -
One way to handle the big changes
Posted Monday, March 23, 2020, at 10:54 AMI was lucky to be sick a lot when I was a child. I never realized those many weeks I spent on the living room couch was a blessing until this Coronvirus hit. I learned to keep myself amused with mind games and an old dog puppet my mom made for me. He was black and didn’t have a nose. Mom either ran out of time or didn’t figure out how to close the fabric and put on a nose... -
The times are changing
Posted Sunday, February 2, 2020, at 12:00 AMThe Chamber of Commerce luncheon last week drew a very large crowd. I can't remember the last time that many people filled the YMCA Community Room for a regular luncheon of the Chamber of Commerce. Of course, it wasn't a regular luncheon. The mayor only comes and gives his state of the city speech once a year and this time he saved until last an acknowledgment that Brazil is no longer the city of clay and coal. ... -
What does a new city image really mean?
Posted Monday, January 20, 2020, at 9:55 AMNext Tuesday, January 28th, will mark what may be the most important “State of the City” address in Mayor Brian Wyndham’s career. It is that important because it will illustrate what many of us have seen happening over the past decade or so: Improvements to the City of Brazil... -
Welcome to my world ... on the Internet
Posted Friday, January 10, 2020, at 11:30 AM1You might be surprised to learn how wide an influence has Brazil, Clay County and The Brazil Times. It happened again this past week. I received emails and a call from a man identifying himself as from the Boston, Massachusetts, area. He read/heard about the City Council meeting and the decision to look further into the Safe Haven “baby box” issue... -
It's time to recognize public servants
Posted Sunday, December 15, 2019, at 4:48 PMWith the “retirement” of one of Brazil’s most dedicated public servants and gentlemen, it’s time to recognize all those ladies and gentlemen who take public service to mean the best sense of the word. I have come to admire Roy KellAR over the past several years. ... -
Crowns off to members of the church
Posted Sunday, December 8, 2019, at 6:47 PMThe Bible indicates that God loves the worship of his people. In one of the books, Revelation, I think, the 24 elders cast their crowns before the throne of God. This is the season to bring such things to mind and I think God has to be pleased with all the adoration given His son by the churches in our area... -
While we were enjoying Thanksgiving
Posted Sunday, December 1, 2019, at 6:00 PMWhile we were enjoying Thanksgiving Two organizations worked hard on Thanksgiving Day to impact the citizens of Brazil and they reached nearly 10% of the city as a result. That does not mean these two organizations were the only ones that were blessing Brazil, far from it. We had the hospital, sheriff’s department, police department and fire department working to keep us protected as well... -
Did you enjoy Route 40 Fest? How about ...
Posted Friday, November 15, 2019, at 4:09 PMYou just don’t realize how much sacrifice is given in this county when you see it in front of you one scene, one memory at a time. But when someone puts together a video, a string of photos, you get a whole different perspective ... at least I do... -
Two guys deserve to be called out
Posted Tuesday, November 5, 2019, at 9:46 AMThere are two guys I want to call out today for what they are doing for our fine city. These guys have been in the paper but not nearly as often as they should for what they are achieving. They are Northview Marching Knights Band Director Dominic Thompson and Mayor Brian Wyndham... -

More than once, people have mentioned this week they enjoy reading my column, which is usually about people and their stories... -
The best medicine
Posted Friday, August 30, 2019, at 11:34 AMLaughter, it is said, is good medicine. I am convinced being with people you enjoy, with whom you have a common bond, can lead to the best kind of laughter. Laughter that you don’t even know is coming, that brings smiles from all on hand. Laughter that leaves you feeling good when you part company... -
Getting ready for autumn
Posted Wednesday, August 14, 2019, at 11:51 AMFall usually meant two things to me when growing up. It meant new school supplies and Grandpa Zellers was coming to visit for the winter. It did not mean new school clothes. I liked the clothes already hanging in my closet, thank you...
