More than 3,000 peoplle showed up at the Indiana State University gym on a Tuesday night in 1950 to watch the Golden Gloves finals which had started three weeks earlier. Chapmpions in each weight division were gong to be chosen. The Golden Gloves fights were sponsored by the Tribune Star with sports writer Bob Nesbitt in charge by the middle of March. Some people who can be identified in the photo are Harry Jones, the Woods brothers, Grover Young, Cordell Hull, Clarence Monce, Vestel Hadley, Walter Hull and Jim Hutcheson.
I went to see Harry Jones back in the middle 1980s when he was selling his hardware store, The Brazil Hardware.
I told him who I was and then asked if he remembered Cordell Hull.
His eyes lit up and he said with a smile, "I sure do. H was my favorite fighter among the boys that boxed and became champs. I favored him."
Truthfully, Harry liked all the boys.
He was a well-respected man in Brazil and had a lot to do with Brazil Eagles Club boxing success in the 1950s.
